Trugoy The Dove, member of iconic hip hop group De La Soul, sadly passes away at 54
David Jude Jolicoeur, also known as Trugoy The Dove and recognized as a member of the iconic 1980s-90s hip hop group De La Soul, passed away at the age of 54 on Sunday (Feb. 12th). Details regarding the cause of Jolicoeur's death have yet to release, though some suspect that complications regarding his heart could have been at play given his hospitalization in 2020 due to congestive heart failure. His passing comes before the upcoming release of De La Soul's most popular albums, such as Stakes Is High and Buhloone Mindstate, to streaming sites after a settled contractual-dispute with Tommy Boy Records, Soul's former label.
Fans and fellow artists across social media expressed their grief over Trugoy's death, including proclamations from the likes of Pharrell, Queen Latifah, and Busta Rhymes.
"Trugoy Dave from De La Soul has gone up to be with the day of the stars with the Master," from a Pharrell tweet. "Sending love, light and positive vibrations to his family, The Soul and everyone whose lives have been touched by his existence. Oodles and Oodles and Oodles of O’s."
From Busta on Instagram: "Complete Disbelief that I’m typing this right now. This one hurts Bad...Dave aka Trugoy the Dove Fly Beloved Fly.. Rest Easy King."
A reposted Instagram story from Latifah read "Rest in peace to a great soul Trugoy the Dove" over a photo of the deceased rapper.
