Diddy recently revealed that he pays Sting $5,000 a day as royalties for sampling the singer's classic song "Every Breath You Take" without his permission
Sting and Diddy's life-long deal has caught the Internet's attention.
Recently, a 2018 interview of Sting on the The Breakfast Club podcast began circulating in which the English singer revealed that his iconic song "Every Breath You Take" was sampled by Puff Daddy for his hit song "I'll Be Missing You"; however, Diddy only asked for permission from Sting to use the sample after the 1997 song released. Sting then claimed that a deal was struck between the two where Diddy must pay Sting $2k a day for the rest of his life.
In response to the resurfaced clip of the interview on Twitter, Diddy responded by clarifying that the amount he pays is actually higher.
"Nope. 5K a day. Love to my brother @OfficialSting!"
Check out the tweet here:
$5k a day till one's death would be too excessive of an arrangement for most people to abide by, but Diddy status likely allows him to maintain his agreement with Sting, and he at least certainly seems content with his agreement with Sting.
Still, if Diddy had just waited to get permission for the sampling before releasing his song, or simply pay Sting a large sum earlier on as compensation, perhaps he could have avoided being in a life-long debt. Regardless, Sting seems to never have to really worry about his pockets being empty thanks to Diddy.
